Jazz Luncheon hosted by the Southern African American Heritage Center

Location: Wesley United Methodist Church Educational Building, 307 Greene St.

Our guest speaker is Dr. Karen Chandler, associate professor of the College of Charleston and co-founder/principal of the Charleston Jazz Initiative.  She will also have for sell LEGENDS, a CD recording of jazz artists who are native to Charleston and those with musical and familial ties to South Carolina.

“Meet the Pioneers” Fall Walking Tour

Come and join us for our 1st annual “Meet the Pioneers” Fall Cemetery Walking Tour at Foundry Hill Cemetery. We will learn about the contributions of local African Americans and where they are buried. Mr. Ted Bradley a caretaker of the cemetery and Felicia Flemming-McCall will be the tour guides.  We will meet you at the front of the cemetery on Marion Street. Make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes and bring along your book, African Americans of Chesterfield County if you like.Date: Saturday, October 27, 2012

SUMMER CAMPS AND EVENTS 2012


The 54th Massachusetts Co. I, Civil War Reenactment  will be sharing stories about African American soldiers.  There will also be activities and we will sample camp food.

 Date: June 16, 2012

Crafting with Ms. Gina: Crafters will enjoy some craft activities, supplies included in the activity fee.

Ms. Felicia’s History Day Camp & Finishing School for Young Ladies

In this day camp, girls will focus on etiquette, handcrafts, expressions, culminating on the

final day with a tea party.  Camp includes the opportunity to learn about African American women who shaped history, the Underground   Railroad and more. Supplies included in activity fee.

Dates: July 16-19, 2012                  

Ages: (8-13)

Charm Session

Girls and boys will learn manners and etiquette through fun activities.  Meeting and greeting, table manners and many more life skills.  The last day will culminate with a three course dinner to practice what we learned.

Dates: July 23-25, 2012

Storyteller and interpreter Tyree Rowell from York County, SC will be sharing the story of “Cato” a young slave.  Cato will share stories, songs, games and teach us how to make brooms.  Supplies included in activity fee.

Museum Class: Easter Egg Decorating

10:00am - 12:00pm

Southern African American Heritage Center

125 Kershaw Street, Cheraw, SC 29520

Our museum class will learn how to create several natural dyes for eggs, and participants will get to take home several eggs they dye themselves.  You will also paint an egg to take home.  We will play some fun games while the eggs dry.  Pre-registration is required and space is limited. 

 Admission: $12 for adults & children, If the minimum number of participants is not met, enrollment fee will be refunded in this case.

Christmas Past- Come learn about Christmas customs of African Americans living in the 1800s.  We will also decorate the Heritage Center the old fashioned way with craft activities.  Ages 5-18/ Activity Fee $10.00

Happy Kwanzaa- Join the Heritage Center for a celebration of family, community, and culture. Learn about the seven principles of Kwanzaa, enjoy hands on activities and enjoy a traditional recipe that celebrates Kwanzaa.  Ages 5-18/ Activity Fee $10.00
